Figure Painting

For our last project in Painting II we can do anything we want. I have been dying to attempt figure painting. I have not had figure drawing or painting class but it is definitely a frequent subject matter in my sketches. I have this tendency towards line illustration so it's good for me to talk with my professor Drew because he is much about the process and building the surface and creating beautiful texture with the medium. We also talk much about approaching illustration through a lense of fine art painting, so I am hoping to fall somewhere in between. I am looking at Audrey Kawasaki and Jenny Saville for inspiration, two artists who approach their figures much from the opposite spectrum.... so this collaboration of style will be quite an experiment.

Viktor & Rolf

While jumping around online to different fashion blogs and watching some runway on Youtube, my friend Justin suggested that I check out Viktor & Rolf because he thought I would like them. I loved it! They are a design team based from Amsterdam. Their designs are glamour and high fashion with a unique imagination. Their shows are quite fantastical displays paired with great music and sound. Definitely a new favorite.

Thrift Ready to Wear: Spring '09

One of my absolute favorite things to do is have thrift adventure shopping days! I brought some good amigos of mine and we set out for our local thrift and resale shops. I was on the search for some new basics and essentials for spring, along with interesting textiles and clothes that I can alter and combine to create new pieces. It's always great fun to bring home the new purchases to combine and play with existing items in your closet!

[1. high-waisted shorts make a bright statement for spring 2. quirky prints add a personal touch to your basics 3. one of a kind patterns can make any ensemble unique 4. thrift shopping is great! how else do you find a photograph stuffed animal? or (5.) dr. seuss for under a dollar?]

The Generation of Change

Last weekend, I and a few others traveled to Washington D.C. to join a revolution called The Rescue. It took place in 100 cities around the world and was hosted by Invisible Children, a non-profit that fights to save child soldiers in Uganda. We joined 2,500 others in D.C. to fight the longest running war in Ugandan history, and marched and rallied outside the capitol. We waited to be "rescued" by the media, celebrity moguls, and politicians. We were rescued, however some cities had to wait days to be rescued. The Rescue: Chicago stuck it out for 6 days and made it on Oprah today. You can watch the performance they did for her here. Despite bad video quality, the clip from the Oprah Show is here.

Invisible Children was started by Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey, and Laren Poole, when they were around 21 years old. They have rallied millions around the world to raise awareness of this issue and I believe that we will see the end of this war.

Our generation has an incredible power to make a difference.

I made a shirt to wear to the event by combining and sewing scraps of different fabrics I had in my room. Photos of it can be seen below.
